Seeking True Unending Beauty

Psa. 27:4 ¶ One thing have I asked of the LORD, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to inquire in his temple.

I love beautiful things. I love having that sense of awe. I remember when we went to the Grand Canyon, and I stood on the edge of the canyon in complete awe of it’s beauty and how massive it was. Then we went to Zion National Park and again in awe of the beauty. Driving to Lake Tahoe, and getting the elevated view of the Lake with the snow capped mountains surrounding it is breath taking. These were places that we sought out to go see, and we weren’t disappointed. What is the beauty that you seek out? What are the things, and the people that you find your delight in? Whatever the beauty that we seek here on this planet we have to remember that it is fleeting beauty. One day it will all be burned up. As believers you and I should strive to have the heart of the psalmist in what he was seeking.

First we see the psalmist asked of the LORD, and was seeking after: that He would dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of his life. Now I don’t know about you, but most times want to dwell in my house, and no one to bother me. What a splendid thought here. To dwell in the house of the LORD. Psalm 23 also echos this very thought.

Psa. 23:6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

This dwelling in the house of the LORD is to always be in the presence of God the Father. To spend our time gazing upon His Holiness, His majesty, His excellency. To be in a constant state of awe of who He is.

Secondly the Psalmist wanted to dwell in the house of the LORD so that He could gaze upon the beauty of the LORD. Think about the most beautiful thing or person that you could feast your eyes upon, and understand that beauty doesn’t compare to the beauty of the LORD. The word beauty means delightful, pleasant, to surpass in beauty. To gaze upon the LORD will be a pleasant, delightful time that will never end. His beauty will surpass all beauty, Our eyes will be in a continual state of amazement, and our hearts in a continual state of awe.

The LORD is the one we should be seeking with all our hearts. We seek Him in His word. The Bible is where we see this Glory, Beauty, and Majesty of God himself. May you and I be captured by the excellency, and holiness of our great GOD.  May God open our eyes when we read to see how delightful, how pleasant, and how beautiful He truly is.
